When We Color Ourselves
Color is about lines
And lines are about borders
And borders are about belonging
Mine and yours
I need my space
We must keep our distance
And distance is about fear
We draw lines around our communities, our commitments
We will only go so far
Lines around our conversations
We don’t say what we mean or mean what we say
Lines around our relationships
Don’t cross the line
We don’t color outside of the lines
When we color ourselves
Our bodies become borders
Indications of who belongs to “us” and “them”
They create space and distance
Our color lines create fear
We will only go so far
We will only say so much
We will not cross the line
When we color ourselves
