“Then God said, ‘Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness…”
~ Genesis 1.26, NRSV
According to the biblical narrative, there is only one image, one likeness in which humankind is made in: God’s. This belief assumes that there is one Artist, one design. God is the Creator of all and all was/ is created for His purpose and glory. Race would suggest otherwise, arguing that there were separate creations for each of the socio- culturally constructed races of humanity (This belief is known as polygenesis or co- Adamism.) and thereby different purposes for each human being and/or cultural group. According to race, someone were made to oppressed and others were made to be oppressed; some were made to live and others were made to die: “only the strong survive.” These accounts of human creation and subsequent worth and purpose are very different and suggest that we can not hold both beliefs equally as one will have to yield to the other.
So, whose report will you believe? Whose image are you created in?
