Roxane Gay writes about her recent experience with overt racism in “When no one said anything: How racism goes unquestioned”. She challenges us to examine what is really said about us and about our care of others when persons practice racist speech openly and no one says a word.
I’ve been the coward who doesn’t say anything to racist jokes and comments, and I hate myself for it.
We have enough hate in the world. Don’t hate yourself. 🙂 Instead, work toward speaking up and know that it doesn’t have to be combative or disrespectful in nature. “Speak the truth in love” (Eph. 4.15). For example, “Ouch. Don’t you think that’s a little harsh?” Or, “Wow. I didn’t know that you felt that way.” And you are not the only one who has fallen silent; we have all fallen short in this regard.
