I’ve heard it all before, same candidate, same speech. Race’s promises are more of the same: “I’ll give you more hatred and reminders to separate. I’ll raise your fears about others and your doubts about yourself. A vote for me is a vote for less of you. Now, get out there and vote for what has always been, for who we have always been. We need more of the same.”
Persons are standing in line and casting votes today. They will vote according to their passion or party affiliation. They will vote because of this issue or that hope, trusting the candidate’s ability to resolve it and to bring it about. They will believe that their one vote can make a difference.
If only we would believe the same about race and not cast our ballot in favor of its campaign. You know its slogan: “If you’re white, you’re right. If you’re black, get black. If your brown, stick around. If you’re yellow, you’re mellow. If you’re red, you’re dead.” How childish we remain.
Unable to think for ourselves, we let our skin do the talking. We let race represent us. But, maybe today, you’ll want something different. Perhaps, today, you won’t desire to live according to the social color of skin, to learn by stereotype, to love based on prejudice.
Race will not get my vote. Instead, I’ll stand for the race-less life that is a Christ- filled life. Which one of you, race- based or race-less, will you vote for today?
