A Prayer for the “Undocumented”

Border Patrol Riverine Unit Rescues Child Stranded on Rio GrandeDear God, whose presence and power are documented on every living thing.  We confess that we are Creator- carrying members of the earth.  And You are indivisible– not a country or state to be voted in, a territory to be claimed or conquered.  There are no boundaries or borders, no entries or exits, no fences or color lines, no smugglers or traffickers of Your presence.  You cannot be hidden or denied.  Everywhere there is, You are.

We confess that no one is left unsaid, everyone You have spoken for, all accounted for, all 100 sheep (Luke 15.1-7).  God has spoken everyone into existence, a place on Your tongue means there is a place on Your earth.

Terra Firma.  Your words are not uncertain so we must make room.  Move along, move over, move past our prejudicial assumptions.  Step aside, step down.  Forgive us, Lord.  We have forgotten that the earth is Yours (Psalm 24.1).

But, the earth does not revolve around our country or culture but Your Son.  Remind us Cross- carrying members of our Savior who came down to earth as undocumented divinity and had no place to lay his head (Luke 9.58), who came to his own but they would not receive him (John 1.11).  He was counted in the census and counted as a sheep for slaughter so that our sins would go undocumented (Isaiah 53.7).

Tabula Rasa.  Blank Slate.  New Creatures.  Living Epistles.

Jesus, You paid it all while we were away from home yet not without a home.  Remind us to welcome the stranger, to entertain these angels because You are watching and documenting it all.  In the name of Jesus the Christ, we pray.  Amen.
