Eckhart von Hochheim[1] said, “If the only prayer you ever say in your entire life is thank you, it will be enough. It’s praying time.
Holy God, we bless Your name and the extravagant evidence that is all around us that speaks of Your power and presence and purpose in the world. We confess that You are the Way, that we are never lost, never losing but only gaining more and more of You— regardless of place and space, time and circumstance.
We confess that You are the only Step we need take in order to be found, that You are the Guide and the Journey, our Compass and Fellow Traveler. No matter the missteps of this life, we will be led right back to You, right into Your arms, gathered up and held together— thoughts stitched, heart fastened, soul- mended. We praise You because You not only prepare the way but You lead us “in the way everlasting.”[2]
God, we thank You for hearing our prayers, spoken and unspoken, known and unknown, hidden under our tongues or revealed for all to hear. We thank You because You know what we need before we ask it, because You know what ails us, who and what and when it hurts us, because You know what excites us and You love to provide us with this life’s pleasures, because You know us best and yet You love us better than anyone we’ve ever met. This is why we praise You and You are our joy, the pep in our step that causes our hearts to skip a beat though road- weary. We praise You because You are the Way-maker.
Just thinking about You leaves us breathless, speechless, still, step-less. Overwhelmed and overloaded by Your benefits,[3] we struggle to express our gratitude, only able to squeeze out two words: Thank You. It is in the name of Jesus the Christ, we pray. Amen.
